Modern Filming – iPhone episode of Modern Family

Modern Filming – iPhone episode of Modern Family

It’s been revealed that Modern Family have just produced an entire episode filmed with Mac devices including iPhones, iPads, MacBooks. The characters in the story connect and converse throughout the episode via their devices and a lot of story is being told by what’s happening in the background. It just goes to show how far the technology in our hands has come.

But before you decide that now is the time to start making your feature project with your phone just consider a few things. Modern Family is a brilliant show because it has great characters, brilliant scripts and excellent performances. This is then all captured using technology. What technology is used would be irrelevant if it didn’t have those three things going for it in the first place.

Similarly the Australian classic comedy movie, The Castle is not an example of brilliant technical film production. It is nonetheless, a much loved movie because once again, it has great characters, a brilliant script and excellent performances.

We all have the technology at our fingertips today to make video productions. That is no longer the issue. The issue is making sure it works.

  • You need to have the right message for your intended audience.
  • You need to be clear on the purpose for your production.
  • You need to still light it and frame it well.
  • You need to consider what background will support your message.
  • You need to need to have a solution for the audio.

But it’s not that difficult to get right if you know what to do.

It’s not the technology. It’s what you do with it.
