The Overnight Success

The Overnight Success

Are you ever amazed at how someone suddenly achieves tremendous success? It often appears to come from nowhere. I remember watching an interview with a morning show presenter asking Keith Urban about his overnight success. Keith very politely avoided the question. The show host asked it again.

I could see Keith was holding back from saying to this chap – “Are you insane! Have you not done your research?!! Have you no idea how long I’ve been working in this industry, how many gigs I performed, how many awards I’ve won along the way? Just because you only heard of me after I married Nicole doesn’t make me an overnight success you dingbat.” To his credit Keith held his tongue and diverted the conversation to something else.

Similarly do you ever wonder about the tragic circumstances someone finds themself in? How did they possibly end up there?

I’ve just been listening to an audio book of The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. The premise is that these quantum leaps of success or failure don’t just happen. They are the result of regular step by step actions – either in a positive direction or a negative direction. Doing ten push ups one day will not

make you fit or strong, but doing ten push ups every day will, over a period of time, create a positive benefit. Similarly eating a hamburger one day won’t kill you, but eating one every day will over time deteriorate your health.

Sometimes we might set goals but avoid them because they are too ambitious or too far away. Taking one small step towards your goal each day will get you there. Using your time well will make a difference. Do you commute to work or meetings and have time to listen to the radio? Then why not listen to some audio books. 15 minutes in a car twice a day can add up. Are you watching TV shows that do nothing for you but have just become a habit? Could you go for a walk, read to your kids, talk to your kids, make some kids? 🙂

What small steps can you start taking to set you on your path to overnight success?
